A new association founded by Mateusz Morawiecki has triggered controversy within Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, leading to a suspension and internal debate.
Szczucki’s Association Membership Sparks Conflict
PiS MP Krzysztof Szczucki is a founding member of the “Rozwój Plus” (Development Plus) association, established by Mateusz Morawiecki. Szczucki stated his commitment to working within the association to attract new supporters for development initiatives.
Party Officials Denounce Association as ‘Extra-Party’
The association’s formation has caused friction within PiS. Party spokesman Rafał Bochenek asserted that the association is not a party-affiliated entity but an “extra-party” one, contradicting the party’s statutes.
Bochenek further explained that the party’s Political Committee had reminded members that membership in organizations conflicting with PiS’s goals, principles, or interests is prohibited without party approval.
Szczucki Defends Membership, Cites Textual Interpretation
Szczucki stated he has no intention of leaving PiS, emphasizing his preference for interpreting written statements literally. He argued that Bochenek’s post does not explicitly state the association is incompatible with the party’s statutes.
Kaczyński Convened Meeting Amidst Growing Tensions
Agata Kondzińska of Wyborcza.pl reports that Jarosław Kaczyński has called a meeting of PiS authorities to determine whether to pursue multiple strategies or to radicalize the party’s approach.
Kaczyński’s Stance Remains Unclear, Szczucki Predicts No Expulsion
When asked about the possibility of Kaczyński demanding resignation from either the party or the association, Szczucki stated that the party leader has not made such a demand and he believes he won’t. He highlighted the existence of various bodies within PiS, including a team working on a new constitution.
Kaczyński Plans to Establish Expert Council
In response to the “Rozwój Plus” association, Kaczyński intends to establish an Expert Council to facilitate the involvement of individuals and organizations in preparing the party’s program and initiatives for upcoming parliamentary elections, according to Bochenek.
Szczucki’s Suspension and Lack of Justification
Szczucki is currently suspended from PiS. He claims the suspension letters from Kaczyński and Professor Karol Karski lacked any justification. He suspects his views on the Constitutional Tribunal and criminal procedure code may have contributed to the decision, and acknowledges his collaboration with Morawiecki could be a factor.
