On Monday, PiS MP Łukasz Mejza was cited for driving about 200 km/h on the S3 near Polkowice, sparking a chain of statements from party leaders, the interior minister, and his own public apology.
Speeding on the S3 near Polkowice
On Monday morning, PiS MP Łukasz Mejza drove near 200 km/h, roughly twice the speed limit on the S3 in the Lower Silesian region. He refused to accept the ticket issued by the police.
Public apology and immunity discussion
Mejza issued a statement to Radio ZET, explaining that he was traveling on a motorway, not a built‑up area, and declined the fine because it would have made him miss a flight. He offered to pay the fine if possible or to immediately waive his parliamentary immunity.
Party leaders condemn the conduct
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński urged that Mejza would be held accountable: “We will not let it slide. The police did their job. Mejza will answer for this barbaric raid.”
PiS European MP Maciej Wąsik warned that as long as Mejza does not voluntarily relinquish immunity, his colleagues would vote to strip it. Brussels‑born Wąsik’s comments were echoed by Łomianek MP Eliasz Grubiński, who added, “We don’t care if he gets a criminal fine, but we want him expelled from PiS.”
Another PiS MP, Joachim Brudziński, called the attempt to cover a clear traffic violation with parliamentary immunity “extremely stupid and irresponsible,” hoping Mejza would relinquish his immunity voluntarily.
Case to be reviewed by ethics committee
Mejza said he was ready to bear full responsibility and that the matter would be examined by the party’s ethics committee, according to PiS spokesman Rafał Bochenek.
Polish political career in brief
Mejza was first elected to the Lubusz County council in 2014 on the Better Lubusz list. He unsuccessfully ran for parliament in 2019 on the PSL list but entered the Sejm in 2021 after the death of a PSLMP. After joining the Republican Party he served as deputy minister of culture, and later of sport and tourism, before winning a seat under the PiS banner in 2023.
