PiS spokesperson Rafał Bochenek announced on June 2 that Michał Drewnicki, deputy chairman of the Krakow City Council, will represent the party in the upcoming early mayoral elections in Krakow.
Party Selection Process
Rafał Bochenek emphasized that the party conducted a thorough vetting of Drewnicki’s background, noting that he is a recognizable figure within the Krakow political environment due to his long-standing service to the city.
Drewnicki’s Platform and Priorities
Confirming his candidacy on social media, Drewnicki stated he aims to end a “two-tier Krakow.” He emphasized his roots in the Nowa Huta district and his experience as a local businessman and councilor.
His platform focuses on addressing the needs of previously excluded residents, including those in peripheral neighborhoods lacking infrastructure. He specifically pledged to break the city’s dependence on the “developer-tourism lobby,” which he claims drives up living costs and displaces locals.
Electoral Context and Opponents
Early elections were triggered by the recall of Aleksander Miszalski, with Stanisław Kracik currently serving as acting mayor. The official election date has yet to be finalized.
Other confirmed candidates include Bartosz Bocheńczak for Confederation, Aleksandra Owca for the Razem party, and Grażyna Zofia Świat for the Non-Partisan Local Government Activists of Lesser Poland. Marian Banaś and Marianna Schreiber have also announced their intention to run, while the Civic Coalition has yet to name a candidate.
