PiS Suspends Szczucki Amidst Tensions with Kaczyński

Krzysztof Szczucki has been suspended from his rights as a member of Poland’s PiS party, reportedly following disagreements with party leader Jarosław Kaczyński.

Szczucki Suspended from PiS Membership

Krzysztof Szczucki has been suspended from the rights of a PiS member, though the reason for the suspension remains unexplained by party officials.

Parliament Fails to Override Presidential Veto

On Friday, March 27th, the Sejm majority failed to override President Karol Nawrocki’s veto of an extensive amendment to the Code of Criminal Procedure and other laws.

244 deputies voted against overriding the veto, including all members of the KO, PSL-TD, Lewica, Centrum, and Polska 2050 clubs. 180 deputies voted against rejecting the veto, including 175 of the 177 present members of the PiS club.

Szczucki’s Vote and Reasoning

Krzysztof Szczucki and Paweł Jabłoński abstained from voting on the veto override. Szczucki stated his abstention was due to his belief that the temporary arrest system needs reform, and that the governing coalition’s law contained numerous errors.

Constitutional Tribunal Concerns

Szczucki also indicated he did not want to support a PiS motion to the Constitutional Tribunal regarding the selection of judges to the TK. He believes pursuing this action will not lead to a resolution of the issues within the justice system.

Alignment with Morawiecki and Leadership Preferences

Szczucki is considered close to Mateusz Morawiecki’s circle and was absent from the PiS convention where Jarosław Kaczyński presented Przemysław Czarnek as the party’s prime ministerial candidate.

When asked if Czarnek was a better candidate for head of government than Morawiecki, Szczucki responded negatively.
