The European Parliament has voted on amendments regarding the UPA, sparking a split among Polish representatives over historical accountability and conditions for Ukraine’s future European Union accession negotiations.<\/p>\n
MEPs adopted an amendment proposed by the European People’s Party (EPP), which includes the Polish Civic Coalition (KO) and PSL. The proposal was voted on in five distinct parts.<\/p>\n
The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), which includes PiS, introduced their own amendment. They urged the EU to freeze further negotiation clusters with Ukraine until the state recognizes the UPA\u2019s ethnic cleansing campaign against Poles and atrocities committed against the Jewish population.<\/p>\n
The second point of the amendment proved to be the most contentious. While the majority of Polish MEPs voted in favor, Grzegorz Braun, Dariusz Jo\u0144ski, Micha\u0142 Kobosko, Ewa Kopacz, Jagna Marczu\u0142ajtis-Walczak, Jacek Protas, Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus, El\u017cbieta \u0141ukacijewska, and Krzysztof \u015amiszek voted against it.<\/p>\n
Voting patterns shifted across the five points. Grzegorz Braun consistently opposed several segments, while other Polish MEPs, including El\u017cbieta \u0141ukacijewska and Micha\u0142 Dworczyk, abstained or skipped specific votes throughout the session.<\/p>\n
Following a meeting in Ankara, President Karol Nawrocki reported that historical tensions with Ukraine remain unresolved. He emphasized that for Poles, the issue of UPA symbols is non-negotiable and that “Banderite flags limit Ukraine’s future in the EU.”<\/p>\n
Despite these frictions, the President maintained that the Russian Federation remains the primary threat to regional security. He affirmed that Poland and Ukraine share a unified perspective regarding the defense of their national independence.<\/p>\n
