Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner has suspended his campaign following a series of serious public accusations, including claims of sexual assault and past incidents of erratic, offensive behavior.<\/p>\n
Graham Platner announced the suspension of his campaign in a social media video, flatly denying the serious accusations leveled against him in recent days. He stated that the events described did not occur and noted that he was withdrawing during the final week possible to remove his name from the candidate list.<\/p>\n
Platner intends to officially exit the November Senate race once he is assured that the replacement process will be open and democratic. He emphasized that while he will not dictate his successor, the choice must reflect the values of Maine residents.<\/p>\n
Platner had been slated to challenge Republican Susan Collins, who has held the seat since 1996 and is currently the longest-serving Republican senator. Thirty years ago, Collins campaigned on a promise to serve no more than two terms.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, former partner Jenny Racicot alleged to Politico that in 2021, Platner forced himself on her at her home despite her clear protests, describing the event as rape. She provided documentation, including correspondence with a therapist, as evidence.<\/p>\n
The Washington Post and CNN reported further allegations from other women involving non-consensual sexual acts and violent behavior. The organization Reckoning Action stated it had worked with several women who reported previous relationships with the candidate.<\/p>\n
Controversy was further fueled by past social media posts in which Platner identified as a “communist,” criticized police officers, and labeled rural white Americans as racists. Additional scrutiny followed reports of a now-covered SS-related tattoo on his chest, which he claimed was a mistake made due to alcohol and mental health struggles.<\/p>\n
Graham Platner is a 41-year-old Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although he currently works as an oyster farmer, reports indicate that his image as a working-class representative is largely an illusion, as he is the son of a wealthy attorney and a restaurateur.<\/p>\n
The upcoming November elections will determine the composition of the entire 435-seat House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate. Currently, Republicans hold 218 seats in the House to the Democrats’ 214, and maintain a 53-seat majority in the Senate.<\/p>\n
