A Russian couple claiming refugee status in Poland has been sentenced for spying for the FSB and orchestrating an attempt to ship an improvised explosive device via a courier service. <\/p>\n
On Thursday, a court delivered its verdict against a Russian couple. Investigators established that from February to August 2022, Igor R. collaborated with Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) against Poland. He collected and transmitted intelligence concerning Russian opposition activists in Poland, as well as the individuals and institutions assisting them, including Polish Foreign Ministry staff, academics of Russian descent, and members of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.<\/p>\n
Igor and Irina R. had arrived in Poland under the protection of the Polish Foreign Ministry with refugee status. Igor R. had faced criminal charges in Russia for draft evasion and participated in opposition protests. While receiving government scholarships and studying at the University of Silesia, the couple resided in a dormitory in Sosnowiec, where Irina worked as a nail technician.<\/p>\n
The National Prosecutor’s Office stated that Igor R. provided gathered data to his wife, Irina R., on encrypted electronic storage devices for further transfer to the FSB in Russia. Her role was to deliver this intelligence to Russian intelligence services.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors further charged Igor R. with participating in a July 2024 plot alongside two Ukrainian citizens and one Russian to ship an explosive device via courier. Authorities were alerted to a suspicious package at an InPost warehouse containing a thermos, engine coolant, and power banks. Experts determined that the power bank and military detonators concealed inside markers formed a cumulative bomb intended to cause significant damage to critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The Internal Security Agency (ABW) has characterized Poland as a victim of an “undeclared war” waged by Russia. In a May report, the agency highlighted an unprecedented rise in investigations related to hostile intelligence operations.<\/p>\n
Between 2024 and 2025, 69 such proceedings were initiated\u2014a figure equivalent to the total number recorded over the preceding 32 years (1991\u20132023). While annual investigations rarely exceeded six before 2022, the count rose to 13 in 2023, 21 in 2024, and 48 last year.
