Starting July 13, 2026, ZUS will introduce a new design for pensioner ID cards. Millions of seniors are not required to replace their current documents or submit new applications, as existing cards retain their full legal validity.<\/p>\n
The update affects approximately 8.1 million benefit recipients, but it does not mean everyone will receive a new card immediately. If a pensioner currently holds a valid ID, they may continue using it without any action or notification to ZUS.<\/p>\n
The new ID cards will only be issued to individuals receiving their first document from ZUS, or those requiring a replacement due to loss or damage. Not every senior will receive the updated card automatically.<\/p>\n
The design change is driven by the classification of pensioner IDs as third-category public documents, necessitating enhanced security features. New cards will be manufactured from durable PVC and include a guilloche pattern, micro-printing, and an individual serial number to prevent counterfeiting.<\/p>\n
The increased security and lamination process will raise production costs per card from under 1.05 PLN to approximately 2.24 PLN. Total expenditure on these updated documents is estimated to reach 4.6 million PLN over the next decade.<\/p>\n
The design update extends to the digital version of the ID card available in the mObywatel application. No additional application is required for the digital version, which will display the holder’s photo, personal data, and document validity while omitting the specific ZUS branch information.<\/p>\n
The mObywatel application remains entirely voluntary. Seniors who do not use the app can continue to use their traditional plastic ID or apply for a new personalized card using the ERL form if they so choose.<\/p>\n
