Prosecutors have requested a 20-year prison sentence for \u0141ukasz \u017bak, the man accused of causing a fatal high-speed crash on Warsaw\u2019s Trasa \u0141azienkowska, with a verdict expected this Thursday.<\/p>\n
On September 15, 2024, a collision between a Volkswagen and a Ford occurred on the Trasa \u0141azienkowska in Warsaw. A 37-year-old passenger in the Ford died, while his wife and their two children sustained injuries. Paulina K., a passenger in the Volkswagen, was also hospitalized.<\/p>\n
Expert testimony indicates that \u0141ukasz \u017bak was intoxicated and driving at 226 km\/h in an 80 km\/h zone while recording the event on his phone. Following the crash, \u017bak fled the scene with the help of associates before being apprehended in L\u00fcbeck, Germany.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Katarzyna Niemiec-Rudnicka argued that there are no mitigating circumstances, citing \u017bak\u2019s history of drug-related offenses and repeated driving bans. She highlighted that he consumed half a bottle of vodka before driving and showed no concern for his passengers after the crash.<\/p>\n
The prosecution requested a 20-year sentence, a lifetime driving ban, and 600,000 PLN in compensation for the victim’s family. Additionally, the prosecutor noted that \u017bak attempted to influence witnesses and issue threats while in custody.<\/p>\n
The victim’s widow testified that she hopes for a sentence that serves as a social warning, emphasizing that she is simply seeking justice. She noted a lack of empathy or remorse from the accused.<\/p>\n
Defense attorney Izabela \u0141awi\u0144ska argued that the public and media had already judged the accused, undermining the presumption of innocence. She maintained that a fair sentence must be proportional and noted that \u017bak surrendered himself to authorities in Germany.<\/p>\n
Six of \u017bak\u2019s associates also faced charges, including obstructing justice and failing to render aid. While prosecutors requested prison sentences for them, their defense attorneys argued for acquittal.<\/p>\n
Judge Maciej Mitera concluded the court proceedings and scheduled the verdict announcement for July 16.<\/p>\n
