Annual renewable surface water resources in Poland amount to approximately 1,600 cubic meters per capita, significantly below the European Union average of about 4,500 cubic meters. Furthermore, Poland currently retains only about 7 percent of its average annual water runoff, falling short of the national target of 15 percent.<\/p>\n
In response to management challenges, the Federation of Polish Entrepreneurs (FPP) has launched the Water Monitor platform. This service provides essential data on water resources, retention levels, drought risks, and sectoral water usage to support evidence-based decision-making. Water security must now be treated as a pillar of economic policy alongside energy and food security.<\/p>\n
Poland faces significant difficulties not only in water availability but also in retention capacity. Groundwater resources in the country are estimated at 320 cubic meters per capita compared to the EU average of 830 cubic meters. Experts emphasize that developing modern retention infrastructure and natural water management solutions is critical for climate adaptation.<\/p>\n
Drought frequency has increased from once every four to five years in the mid-20th century to approximately once every two years today. With nearly 30 percent of Poland\u2019s land area at high risk of hydrological drought, extreme weather events and insufficient retention are destabilizing food, energy, and economic security.<\/p>\n
The FPP has introduced two strategic documents: the Water Strategy for Industry and the Water Strategy for Agriculture and Agri-food Processing.
