The Archbishop of Gda\u0144sk has issued a public warning regarding commercial entities exploiting grieving families and wedding clients by utilizing Polish Catholic clergy for services marketed as Roman Catholic. <\/p>\n
Archbishop Tadeusz Wojda, the Metropolitan of Gda\u0144sk, has issued a statement warning against abuses in the performance of funerals and the assistance at marriages by clergy of the Polish Catholic Church. The hierarch pointed out that some commercial companies offer these services as identical to Roman Catholic ones.<\/p>\n
The document published on the website of the Archdiocese of Gda\u0144sk is a reaction, as the metropolitan wrote in his letter, to reports flowing into the curia. The faithful mistakenly treat the actions of Polish Catholic clergy as the ministry of their own pastors, which mainly concerns funeral liturgy and assisting at marriages.<\/p>\n
The metropolitan assessed that the problem stems from the unawareness of the faithful and from “market practices,” which he subjected to decisive criticism. He pointed out the constant cooperation of some wedding venue owners and funeral homes with Polish Catholic priests.<\/p>\n
“These entities, driven solely by profit, include the ‘participation of a priest’ in their offer, suggesting that it is a service fully identical to the pastoral activity conducted by the Roman Catholic Church,” wrote Archbishop Wojda.<\/p>\n
The hierarch emphasized that such behavior exploits the difficult emotional state of people after the loss of loved ones. He added that companies organizing wedding ceremonies often ignore the church affiliation of the parties, offering, among other things, “outdoor weddings” with the participation of clergy from other denominations.<\/p>\n
According to the metropolitan, the consequence of such practices is an “enormous drama of conscience.” He wrote that “the faithful often only after the fact \u2013 upon contact with their own parish, handling other formalities, or during the annual pastoral visit \u2013 with astonishment and pain realize the manipulation they experienced and the disordered spiritual state in which they found themselves.”<\/p>\n

Archbishop Wojda reminded that the Polish Catholic Church is a separate religious community. Liturgies and rites performed there have a different canonical status than in the Roman Catholic Church.<\/p>\n
