Polish police and prosecutors arrested a 37-year-old man for the 2011 murder of 13-year-old Izabela Strza\u0142kowska in Gdynia, utilizing a revolutionary genetic genealogy method. <\/p>\n

According to investigators, Micha\u0142 S. was the victim’s neighbor living just a few hundred meters from the crime scene in the same Gdynia D\u0105browa district. Prosecutor Mariusz Marciniak from the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Gda\u0144sk stated that during one of his first conversations with police officers, the suspect said, “Yes, I am the person who did this.”<\/p>\n
Investigators interviewed over 950 people and collected more than 900 DNA samples during the initial and subsequent phases of the inquiry. As the prosecutor’s office stated, the suspect was successfully detained thanks to a DNA profile, though the difficulty in detection stemmed from the lack of direct witnesses and the fact that the isolated perpetrator profile never appeared in available databases, with the victim likely being a random target of an unplanned attack.<\/p>\n
Sub-inspector Banaszewska described that a breakthrough occurred thanks to a revolutionary investigative method applied for the first time in Poland, involving cooperation with a team of experts in genetic genealogy appointed by the prosecutor to type individuals through kinship analysis in broad databases. After two years of work, they identified a man whose genetic connections and other findings pointed to him as the potential perpetrator.<\/p>\n
Investigators tracked down the suspect after his relative voluntarily placed a DNA profile into a publicly available family-search database. Experts matched this trace to the profile secured years ago, narrowing the circle of suspects to specific related individuals.<\/p>\n
On the prosecutor’s orders, police officers collected biological material from the detained 37-year-old and forwarded it to two independent institutions in Gda\u0144sk and Krak\u00f3w. Comparative DNA analyses confirmed a full match between the suspect’s profile and the material secured on the victim’s body in 2011.<\/p>\n
The man faces a sentence ranging from 12 years in prison to life imprisonment for the charged act, and the prosecutor’s office announced the continuation of evidentiary procedures, including psychiatric, psychological, and sexological evaluations of the suspect.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Marciniak stated that clarifying the case was owed to the involved individuals, Iza’s family, and the society of Gdynia to demonstrate that there are no unsolved murders, adding that the services sent a clear signal to all perpetrators of unsolved homicides: “We are coming for you.”<\/p>\n
