The overhaul of the last, fifth track crossing in Aleje Jerozolimskie at the intersection with Emilii Plater is nearing completion, utilizing large-scale prefabricated slabs decorated with the Warsaw mermaid for the first time. During the upcoming weekend of July 24-26, the track crossing will also be replaced, causing a brief suspension of tram traffic on Marsza\u0142kowska Street. Trams will return to Aleje Jerozolimskie from Ochota to the center in early August, while work on the Poniatowski Bridge viaduct will take longer.<\/p>\n
Works across Aleje Jerozolimskie cover 6 km of single track in the first renovation in nearly twenty to thirty years, including track replacement with integration, rail replacement, expansion joint repairs, leveling device replacements, and platform repairs. The renovation does not alter the street geometry or permanent traffic organization, maintaining emergency vehicle passage over the tracks upon request.<\/p>\n
Konrad Niklewicz, management board member of Tramwaj\u00f3w Warszawskich, notes that the difficult project comprises three separate tasks managed by internal teams and two external contractors. Despite unfavorable weather, work outside the viaduct will finish on schedule, allowing a convenient tram connection from Ochota and W\u0142ochy to the Center in early August.<\/p>\n
Crossing renovations are ongoing, with final work currently underway at the Emilii Plater crossing where repairing the existing underground passage’s insulation was necessary due to a broader scope of work. Large-scale prefabricated concrete slabs, manufactured by the Polish company KZN in Cracow using the technology introduced last year at Zawisza Square, are being laid down like puzzles to enable comprehensive crossing and subgrade renovation in a significantly shorter time.<\/p>\n
The individually dimensioned plates allowed for personalization, featuring the city’s promotional mermaid sign on one of them. The crossing at Emilii Plater will be opened to drivers early next week.<\/p>\n
Works in Aleje Jerozolimskie also include the renovation of the track intersection at Rondo Dmowskiego, conducted with tram traffic turned off and crossing elements prepared and welded outside the intersection to minimize disruptions. Over the weekend of July 25-26, tram traffic will be suspended on Marsza\u0142kowska and Andersa streets between Plac Zbawiciela and Stawki, while car passage at the Marsza\u0142kowska and Aleje Jerozolimskie intersection will remain open in all directions.<\/p>\n
Tram lines 15, 16, 17, and 18 will not run for two days, lines 4, 22, 27, 36, 76, 79, and T will change routes, and two supplementary tram lines (75 and 77) will operate. Additionally, bus lines 151 and 520 will have their routes extended to Plac Bankowy.<\/p>\n
Contractors on the historic Poniatowski Bridge viaduct faced challenges because the existing condition did not match historical documentation, requiring additional unpredicted tasks such as sealing the historic structure. Removing the track revealed that the existing drainage failed to function as designed by the previous renovation, with incorrect viaduct deck slopes causing water pooling under the track, necessitating local reprofiling of the deck plate, re-isolation, and repairs to missing or broken cast-iron drains and improperly routed drainage drens.<\/p>\n
Due to the irregular shape of the deck plate and the precision required to align rail heights with the Polyflex road expansion joint, individual on-site reinforcement and formwork for sub-expansion joint beams were necessary without prefabrication. Additional work was also required near the ZDM-renovated underground passage at the Most Poniatowski stop, where an invisible expansion joint seal between the underground passage and the rest of the viaduct structure required extensive track dismantling.<\/p>\n
Strabag, the contractor chosen through a competitive procedure, declares that work will finish by the beginning of the school year, barring adverse weather such as torrential rains, with some work scheduled for evenings, nights, Saturdays, and Sundays. Tramwaj\u00f3w Warszawskich representative Niklewicz states that every effort is being made to restore a convenient connection from Praga Po\u0142udnie to the Center by the start of the new school year.<\/p>\n
Non-viaduct works in Aleje will finish on schedule, and to limit disruptions from extended viaduct construction, Tramwaje Warszawskie will install a temporary crossover behind the National Museum (“palma”) stop, allowing bidirectional trams from Ochota to turn back. At the beginning of August, trams will resume operating along Aleja Krakowska, Gr\u00f3jecka, and Aleje Jerozolimskie to the National Museum via line 9, restoring efficient access to the Center for residents of W\u0142ochy and Ochota.<\/p>\n
Replacement bus lines Z-9 and Z21 will continue running, with Z-9 slightly altering its route between Plac Starynkiewicza and Rondo Wiatraczna. Following the return of trams, the contractor will continue finishing and paving works, which may cause local lane narrowing for 2-3 weeks in August, alongside a temporary 10 km\/h tram speed limit at work points that will be lifted before the end of the holidays.<\/p>\n
