From March 1, 2026, revised ZUS payout rates apply for individuals who, due to health complications resulting inter alia from alcoholism, lost their ability to work. The change applies to insured persons who have been adjudicated as partially or totally incapable of performing their profession and who meet the contribution period requirements.<\/p>\n
In the Polish legal system, the term “alcohol pension” does not formally exist. The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) does not grant any monetary benefit for alcohol addiction alone.<\/p>\n
Support is paid within the framework of the standard disability pension. What does this mean in practice? It boils down to the fact that individuals with alcoholism, provided they are incapable of work, can receive financial support from ZUS. It is treated as a benefit for individuals whose long-term substance abuse led to irreversible, serious damage to internal organs or the nervous system, preventing further professional activity.<\/p>\n
One must be aware that the mere diagnosis of alcoholism is not sufficient for a positive decision by the adjudicating body. The basis is formed only by secondary organ and mental complications that have led to incapacity for work.<\/p>\n
The Act on Pensions from the Social Insurance Fund makes the right to the benefit dependent on the assessment of health consequences rather than the cause of their origin. The systemic justification indicates that the purpose of the payout is social security for a citizen who, as a result of permanent impairment of body efficiency, has lost the ability to independently acquire income.<\/p>\n
The amount of the so-called alcohol pension depends on the incapacity for work. Following this year’s indexation, the base amounts are shaped accordingly.<\/p>\n
The final payout amount may vary depending on individual insurance history and the calculated contribution assessment base.<\/p>\n
Mr. Marek (aged 52) formally worked for 25 years, paying social and retirement contributions. As a result of alcoholism, he developed liver cirrhosis and nervous system damage. The ZUS medical examiner established total incapacity for work. Since the incapacity arose during the insurance period and the applicant possesses the required seniority, ZUS granted the right to the benefit in the amount of 1901.71 PLN gross.<\/p>\n
Mr. Tomasz (aged 45) has a diagnosis of addiction and is undergoing therapy, but diagnostic tests have not shown permanent organ damage. Despite submitting an application, the medical examiner did not establish incapacity for work. ZUS issued a refusal decision due to the failure to meet the medical criterion.<\/p>\n
