During the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea, Gdynia’s Modernist Center was officially added to the prestigious world heritage list as Poland’s 18th site. <\/p>\n
These moments are dedicated to all the residents of our city who care for this exceptional heritage every day and will protect it for all generations, said Oktawia Gorze\u0144ska, Deputy Mayor of Gdynia, shortly after the voting.<\/p>\n
On behalf of the city, I would like to express our sincere gratitude for this inscription, continued the deputy mayor, thanking the committee for its trust and the valuable recommendations of ICOMOS. She noted that this decision is particularly important due to this year’s city centenary celebrations.<\/p>\n
Your decision is a wonderful gift for our anniversary and a tribute to the vision and determination of the people who created one of Europe’s great modernist cities, emphasized Gorze\u0144ska, assuring commitment to protecting this heritage for future generations. The deputy mayor also thanked the team of the City of Gdynia, experts, the Marshal’s Office of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Ambassador, and the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to UNESCO.<\/p>\n
I wish to express our profound gratitude to the committee members for the decision to inscribe the linear modernist city onto the world heritage list, echoed Ambassador Mariusz Lewicki, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to UNESCO.<\/p>\n
He noted that this recognized not only the exceptional urban design, but also Poland’s efforts related to regaining independence after World War I and the generations of Gdynia citizens who have been building this city since its inception exactly one hundred years ago.<\/p>\n
The area covered by the inscription is an 87.9-hectare block in downtown Gdynia. Its boundaries are marked by Jana z Kolna, W\u00f3jt Radtkego, and \u015awi\u0119ty Piotr streets to the north, Marshal Pi\u0142sudski Avenue to the south, and the railway tracks line to the west.<\/p>\n
Gdynia had applied for the status once before. In 2025, the application was sent back for completion to, among other things, clarify the buffer zone and implement mechanisms for assessing the impact of investments on heritage. As evaluated during the 48th session of the UNESCO committee, the city met these requirements.<\/p>\n
In the description published on the UNESCO website, it was noted that the center includes two main street axes and interwar housing blocks reflecting the application of modernist ideas on a large scale.<\/p>\n
Attention was drawn to the fact that they form a characteristic, compact urban organism with distinct, individual architectural forms. As indicated, the downtown area along with the villas on Kamienna G\u00f3ra illustrates a radical break with historicism in the process of transforming the village of Gdynia into the new main window to the world of the Polish state in the interwar period.<\/p>\n
The listing itself does not automatically mean the allocation of additional funds, and Gorze\u0144ska had already reassured before the vote that the UNESCO status would not impose new restrictions on property owners.<\/p>\n
She added that the area has been protected by local spatial development plans for 20 years.<\/p>\n
Poland currently has 18 inscribed sites, of which 16 are cultural and two are natural. Among them are the historic center of Warsaw, the medieval city in Toru\u0144, the castle in Malbork, and Centennial Hall in Wroc\u0142aw.<\/p>\n
The global register includes nearly 1,250 places.<\/p>\n
The deliberations in Busan will last until July 29. During the 48th session, the list also included the ancient Japanese capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara, testifying to the construction of a centralized state, the wild landscapes of Boma-Badingilo in South Sudan, the Greek massif of Olympus, and the beaches in Normandy, the site of the Allied D-Day landings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
