With nearly three million documents now blocked in Poland, data reveals that thousands of criminals are attempting identity theft to secure fraudulent loans and open bank accounts. <\/p>\n
More and more Poles are blocking their identity cards and other documents. In just three months, over 139,000 new reports entered the special system, bringing the total number of blocked documents close to 3 million. A lost or stolen document can be used to extort a loan, open a bank account, or sign a contract under someone else’s name.<\/p>\n
The latest infoDOK report published by the Polish Bank Association shows that the scale of the phenomenon is constantly growing. At the end of June 2026, the Central Database of the “Reserved Documents” System contained 2,996,514 documents.<\/p>\n
In the second quarter of this year alone, Poles blocked 139,342 documents, meaning that an average of over 1,500 reports hit the database every day. Over the last 12 months, the number of new blocks exceeded 313,000, showing that an increasing number of people are aware of the risks associated with losing documents and do not delay in blocking them.<\/p>\n
Bank data shows that caution is justified. In the second quarter of 2026, 9,362 attempts to extort loans totaling PLN 303.1 million were thwarted. This means that, on average, there were over 100 attempted frauds every day, with their total value exceeding PLN 3.3 million. Statistically, this translates to an attempted fraud about every 14 minutes.<\/p>\n
The largest single attempt involved a PLN 3 million loan and was recorded in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.<\/p>\n
The highest number of fraud attempts was recorded in specific voivodeships, with Mazovia also taking first place in terms of the total value of fraud attempts at PLN 73.4 million, followed by the Pomeranian (PLN 26 million) and Silesian (PLN 22.7 million) voivodeships.<\/p>\n
Experts emphasize that time is of the essence when losing an identity card, passport, or other important document. The faster the document is blocked, the lower the risk that someone will use it to take out a loan, sign a contract, open a bank account, or use other services requiring identity verification.<\/p>\n
Blocking can be done in several ways. Once reported, the information goes to the RESERVED DOCUMENTS System, used by all banks in Poland and many other institutions. If a crime has occurred, the theft must be reported to the Police, after which an application for a new document must be submitted.<\/p>\n
Experts emphasize that after document theft, one should not delay either blocking them or reporting the matter to the Police. The faster the formalities are completed, the easier it is later to prove that the document was lost before the loan fraud attempt. If the owner learns about the matter only when submitting their own loan application, explaining the entire situation may take much longer, requiring the collection of documents, filing a crime notification, and explaining the matter with the bank, which can delay obtaining one’s own financing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
