French President Emmanuel Macron warns of difficult weeks ahead as unprecedented wildfires continue to ravage the Gironde department, forcing widespread evacuations and claiming the life of a firefighter. <\/p>\n
President Macron stated that during the firefighting efforts in the Gironde department, “the coming weeks will be difficult.” He simultaneously thanked all services, particularly the fire department.<\/p>\n
France is fighting the fire, with the situation being the “most serious” since World War II. “I am not underestimating the anger,” he added, recalling that the fires authorities must face are “unprecedented.”<\/p>\n
As the president emphasized, facing “structural climate changes,” the forest that will be replanted in Gironde “will no longer be the same.” The Arcachon Bay region, where the fire started last Wednesday, is an area of dense pine forests.<\/p>\n
The head of the Gironde prefecture, Sophie Brocas, said that “this unprecedented fire is not developing according to known logic, it generates its own wind and forces constant adaptation.”<\/p>\n
Renaud Gaudeul, the prosecutor of Bordeaux, reported that the fire in Gironde probably started accidentally due to the use of a brushcutter by workers clearing an area near a high-voltage power line. According to initial findings, applicable work regulations were not violated.<\/p>\n
Macron called for solidarity in the face of the elements, emphasizing the need for a decisive fight against the fire. He noted that the current wave of fires is the most serious since the end of World War II. In 1949, a great fire that consumed the Landes de Gascogne forests was considered by the French to be the most tragic in the country’s history, destroying about 50,000 hectares of forests.<\/p>\n
During a conference at the emergency services center in Bordeaux, the French president reported that the fire in the neighboring Landes department has been brought under control.<\/p>\n
“This is good news,” Macron said, stating that in Gironde “the fight continues, and (the fire) has been stabilized, but it is still intense.” He also emphasized the need for “exceptional caution in the coming hours and days.”<\/p>\n
During the fight against raging forest and grassland fires in the southeast of the country, a 38-year-old firefighter died on Monday, July 27. The firefighter’s death was reported by BFM television, citing fire authorities from the Bouches-du-Rhone department, specifying that the deceased firefighter served at the fire and rescue center in Saint-Etienne-du-Gres.<\/p>\n
The man’s death was confirmed by the command of his home voluntary fire brigade unit. Emergency services reported that the firefighter died while performing his official duties, setting out alone to refuel a vehicle. The circumstances of his death are currently being investigated.<\/p>\n
According to BFM, the 38-year-old is the first firefighter to die in France this year. So far, 88 of his colleagues have been injured, including four on Monday evening during a road traffic accident in the Var department in the southeast of the country.<\/p>\n
The French station reported that due to the fires on Tuesday morning, July 28, the evacuation of the population threatened by the element is continuing. Across the country, over 250,000 people have already been evacuated due to the fires, with about 220,000 in Gironde.<\/p>\n
