Political infighting within healthcare has continued for years, with political groups battling each other in a manner that does not care about the patient. Various factions attempt to prove mutual blame for the difficult situation in the healthcare system while failing to propose any concrete solutions, said Dorota Koryci\u0144ska on the Stan Zdrowia podcast when commenting on the Southern Hospital affair.<\/p>\n
This lack of proposed solutions shows that politicians only care about systemic blunders to advance their political battles without any concern for patients, explained Dorota Koryci\u0144ska, president of the management board of the Polish Federation of Oncology and the Polish Neurofibromatosis Association, as well as a member of the National Oncology Council, the Patient Organization Council at the Patient Ombudsman, and the Patient Organization Council at the Minister of Health.<\/p>\n
According to our interviewee, a strategy to exit the healthcare crisis should have been developed by all political groups long ago, spanning 10 to 12 years rather than a single short term. Politicians must finally find solutions that are not merely election bait.<\/p>\n
Dorota Koryci\u0144ska emphasizes that while major irregularities likely occurred at Southern Hospital, the public political quarrel over the situation completely misses the systemic problem that enables such abuses to happen in the first place.<\/p>\n
This is somewhat like treating symptoms without addressing the causes, as the saying goes that opportunity makes a thief. The problem is that our healthcare system provides these opportunities, and since people and doctors vary, some are honest while others cheat. The system should be organized to eliminate such opportunities so that the problem disappears, said Dorota Koryci\u0144ska.<\/p>\n
Amid the scandal regarding a doctor’s earnings at Southern Hospital, another crucial matter is forgotten: the quality of healthcare. While a truly unique specialist can be paid up to 1.5 million PLN annually, that does not mean every doctor should earn that much, and we must ask what patients actually received in service quality for that 1.5 million PLN.<\/p>\n
We receive a pig in a poke to some extent, because equal pay does not mean fair pay regarding physician salaries, and there are no measurable quality outcomes. How do patients choose specialists? Through the internet and word-of-mouth based on patient opinions, which are highly subjective because patients cannot evaluate many elements objectively and personal experiences vary widely.<\/p>\n
She adds that she knows great doctors with golden hands, noting that if an elite specialist capable of performing complex pediatric surgeries earns half a million, a million, or a million and a half, she has no problem with it, because master physicians should earn as much as possible without throwing the baby out with the bathwater.<\/p>\n
We have legal regulations that mandate both measuring quality and publishing public information about it, but unfortunately, these legal acts are not implemented, which is the biggest problem, warns Dorota Koryci\u0144ska.<\/p>\n
She recalls that in oncology, Poland has adopted the European Code of Cancer Practice, which states that cancer patients have the right to information about the quality and safety of treatment, as well as treatment outcomes achieved in a specific facility, to compare those results.<\/p>\n
This is applied throughout Europe, but not in Poland, leaving us reliant on social media where information is very subjective, says our interviewee.<\/p>\n
Dorota Koryci\u0144ska also highlighted the paradox of waiting lists, noting that we have normalized queues to the point where they are no longer viewed as the core problem. Instead, the pathology perceived by society and politics is bypassing the queues, reflecting a mentality stuck in the PRL-era system of ration cards and queue fights.<\/p>\n
