Starting Thursday, the Capital Referendum Operation \u201cSOR\u201d will launch a signature collection drive across all Warsaw districts to recall Mayor Rafa\u0142 Trzaskowski and the City Council. <\/p>\n
On Thursday, July 30, signature collection will begin on the streets of Warsaw for a petition to hold a referendum recalling capital city mayor Rafa\u0142 Trzaskowski and the Warsaw City Council. The campaign is organized by the Capital Referendum Operation \u201cSOR\u201d.<\/p>\n
As announced by project initiator Maciej Wilk, the documents needed to start the collection have already been prepared. Starting Thursday, volunteers are set to appear in all districts of Warsaw, and those collecting signatures can be recognized by their orange vests, among other things.<\/p>\n
Organizers will have 60 days to collect approximately 132,000 valid signatures from capital residents who hold voting rights. Under the Act on Local Referendums, the petition must be supported by at least 10 percent of eligible voters within the municipality.<\/p>\n
Initiators accuse Warsaw authorities of improper oversight over municipal institutions, road narrowing, administrative bloat, problems with investment implementation, and insufficient engagement by the mayor in city matters, in their view. One of the catalysts for launching the campaign was the situation surrounding the Southern Hospital. These are allegations formulated by the initiators of the initiative, rather than findings by competent authorities.<\/p>\n
Merely collecting the required number of signatures does not mean the automatic recall of the mayor. The signatures will first be verified, and only after their approval can a referendum be ordered, during which residents will decide on the continued tenure of Rafa\u0142 Trzaskowski and the future of the Warsaw City Council.<\/p>\n
A similar referendum took place in the capital in 2013 regarding the recall of then-mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz. The vote was declared invalid due to excessively low turnout, as 25.69 percent of eligible voters went to the polls at that time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
