The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine issued a statement on Wednesday, July 29, regarding precautionary measures for Hasidic pilgrims planning to visit Uman for the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. The holiday will take place from September 11 to 13.<\/p>\n
Hasids travel to the Ukrainian city because it is the burial site of Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav, the founder of Bratslav Hasidism, who wished for his students to be with him during Rosh Hashanah, according to the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI). An estimated 50,000 people make the pilgrimage to Uman annually.<\/p>\n
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported that this year’s holiday celebrations, similar to previous years, could be disrupted by Russian attacks across the country. The ministry noted that the military shells cities, communities, civilian infrastructure, and transport networks with missiles.<\/p>\n
