Warsaw Uprising veteran Wanda Traczyk-Stawska has issued a poignant appeal for residents to honor the 82nd anniversary of the historic 1944 struggle with collective remembrance. <\/p>\n
The Warsaw Uprising began on August 1, 1944, at 17:00. Saturday marks its 82nd anniversary. One of the participants in this event was Wanda Traczyk-Stawska, who issued a short appeal to the residents of Warsaw.<\/p>\n
– I would like to ask all residents of Warsaw that this one day, August 1, be filled with the memory of those who stood up to fight in the Warsaw Uprising – said the 99-year-old heroine in a video published on Wednesday, July 29, by the Capital City of Warsaw Town Hall.<\/p>\n
Traczyk-Stawska was born on April 7, 1927, in Warsaw. When the Second World War broke out, she was only 12 years old. In September 1939, she experienced the loss of loved ones. However, she had to survive this time when Nazi crimes were taking place all around, according to the Museum of the Second World War in Gda\u0144sk.<\/p>\n
Wanda Traczyk-Stawska – despite household chores and caring for her siblings – tried to study and join underground activities. Initially, she gathered information about German troops. Later, she underwent military training and participated in minor sabotage, disrupting the occupier. – This was the basis of what happened later in the uprising – recalled the heroine in a historical record recorded for the Warsaw Uprising Museum. The operational area in which she operated included Northern \u015ar\u00f3dmie\u015bcie, Southern \u015ar\u00f3dmie\u015bcie, and Powi\u015ble.<\/p>\n
The heroine was assigned as a liaison on August 1. Her task initially was to observe the situation. Then she distributed leaflets to the population and checked where fighting was still ongoing and where it had ended. Later she received a weapon, becoming a riflewoman-messenger. She also carried dispatches, built barricades, carried equipment, and fought against the Germans. The insurgent pointed out that the attitude of the citizens was also admirable.<\/p>\n
– I remember the civilian population as the main heroine of the uprising. [\u2026] When we started, they fully supported us and everything I remember from the uprising most warmly and kindly is precisely the attitude of the civilian population – said Traczyk-Stawska in an interview with the Warsaw Uprising Museum.<\/p>\n
After the fall of the Warsaw Uprising, the heroine was taken prisoner by the Germans and stayed in several German prisoner-of-war camps. She returned to Poland in 1947. Subsequently, she graduated from the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Warsaw. Later for many years, she taught at Special Primary School No. 3 at 43 Z\u0105bkowska Street in Warsaw’s Praga district.<\/p>\n
Traczyk-Stawska, however, did not forget her comrades from the uprising and tried to ensure that a Memorial Chamber was established at the Warsaw Insurgents Cemetery in Wola. Next to it is the Memorial Wall commemorating nearly 62 thousand identified civilians and soldiers who died during the Warsaw Uprising.
