In recent days, approximately 1,500 to 2,000 migrants from Morocco have reached the Spanish city of Ceuta, state television TVE reported. Their number has exceeded the city’s capacity to provide care and accommodation.<\/p>\n
Online services feature footage showing some migrants swimming from Morocco using dinghies, inner tubes, or flippers. Others entered the city through a gate in the fence. Upon entering the country’s territory, some shouted, “Long live Spain!”<\/p>\n
It is worth noting that Ceuta and Melilla\u2014Spanish autonomous cities located in North Africa\u2014form the European Union’s only land border with Africa. Both cities periodically face spikes in border-crossing attempts by migrants trying to reach Europe, Reuters reports.<\/p>\n
Prof. Hein De Haas, author of the book “Migration Without Myths: Everything You Need to Know About the Most Contentious Issue in Politics,” argues in an interview with Wyborcza.pl that the notion of an African invasion of Europe is a myth.<\/p>\n
Ceuta local government head Jesus Vivas stated that the situation is a humanitarian and social crisis. He appealed for central government help and called for a state of emergency and a single state-level command to control the situation.<\/p>\n
However, according to the Ministry of the Interior, a state of emergency is not foreseen in the event of a migration crisis.<\/p>\n
The daily “El Pais” recalled events from 2021, when at least 5,000 migrants entered Ceuta in a single day. At that time, the Spanish authorities sent the military to the location.<\/p>\n
This time, the ministry assured that it has resources allowing it to guarantee security, migration control, and necessary humanitarian aid. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska is scheduled to travel to Ceuta on Friday (July 31).<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized in a post on X that the government is committed to preparing appropriate measures. He also reported that he is cooperating with Moroccan authorities on the matter, adding that it is time to work out solutions in a spirit of responsibility and cooperation.<\/p>\n
The Spanish government stands out among other European countries for its liberal approach to migration policy, Reuters notes. Authorities have launched a program intended to grant legal status to approximately 500,000 undocumented migrants, which has generated significant response.<\/p>\n
Right-wing parties criticized the idea, claiming it could encourage more migrants to come to Spain. Politicians blamed Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez for the situation in Ceuta. Alberto Nunez Feijoo, leader of the conservative opposition and head of the People’s Party, wrote on X that the situation in Ceuta is desperate and the government cannot turn a blind eye to a national security crisis.<\/p>\n
