Following a missile strike within Polish territory, Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador and handed him a formal note of protest. <\/p>\n
“Today, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador in connection with yesterday’s missile strike on Polish territory,” wrote Prime Minister Tusk on the platform X. MFA spokesperson Maciej Wewi\u00f3r added at a press briefing that the Russian diplomat received a protest note from the hands of the MFA Undersecretary of State and National Security Advisor Robert Kupiecki.<\/p>\n
“The ambassador heard from us an unequivocal condemnation of hostile actions aimed at the security of a sovereign state and its citizens,” said the MFA spokesperson. He emphasized that the Polish side demands “the cessation of actions that pose a threat to the life and security of Polish men and women, while also carrying the risk of air traffic disaster.” “We noted that any escalation on the border of the EU and the North Atlantic Alliance is unacceptable,” Wewi\u00f3r added.<\/p>\n
On Thursday at 3:40 a.m., an unidentified object was detected in Polish airspace. An F-16 fighter jet was dispatched to identify and intercept it. At 3:46 a.m., the object vanished, and services localized its crash site near the town of Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin Voivodeship.<\/p>\n
The District Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin, which is investigating the matter, stated on Thursday that it was most likely a Kh-101 missile containing a “significant amount” of explosives. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense W\u0142adys\u0142aw Kosiniak-Kamysz reported that one missile entered Polish airspace and a second came close to doing so, but turned back before the border.<\/p>\n
“In the explosion crater and in its immediate vicinity, we have uncovered a very large number of aircraft components\u2014because that is how we treated it from the very beginning\u2014which were systematically secured,” said Marcin Kozak, spokesperson for the Lublin prosecutor’s office.<\/p>\n
He added that propulsion and electronics elements, among other things, were secured. Investigators also want to examine soil samples from the incident site, which he explained will help determine what explosives were in the missile. Government representatives assure that had the missile posed a threat to inhabited areas, it would have been shot down.<\/p>\n
In connection with the violation of Polish airspace, alarm sirens wailed on Thursday in Lublin and Krasnystaw. The alarms were quickly cancelled. The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration later reported that the SPO-13 procedure was activated, which concerns warning and alerting troops and the civilian population about the threat of airborne strikes.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson for NATO’s Allied Command Operations (SHAPE), Colonel Martin O’Donnell, assured that NATO remains in close contact with Polish authorities regarding the violation of Polish airspace.
