Meticulous operational work by officers from the Economic Crime Department led to the arrest of a 27-year-old Ukrainian citizen, who played the role of a “courier” in an organized “investment” fraud scheme. Thanks to professional reconnaissance and the swift reaction of the officers, another extortion of 320,000 zloty from a female resident of Warsaw was thwarted. By court decision, the man was temporarily arrested for three months.<\/p>\n
Officers from the Economic Crime Department obtained information indicating that a large sum of money was to be handed over in the Mokot\u00f3w area to a person posing as an investment company courier. The officers immediately initiated their operations.<\/p>\n
At the designated location, they noticed a woman waiting with a prepared bag. Several dozen minutes later, a young man approached her, handed her a bouquet of flowers, provided a previously agreed-upon password, and then collected the package supposed to contain cash. Upon receiving the package, the officers immediately detained the man.<\/p>\n
As investigators established, the victim had been manipulated for several weeks by individuals impersonating investment advisors. Convinced she was investing financial funds via an online platform, the woman systematically handed over cash and funds using codes. She lost a total of over 402,000 zloty, and the detained man was supposed to collect money from her at least twice. Thanks to the police actions, the transfer of another 320,000 zloty did not take place.<\/p>\n
The matter did not end there. That very day, police officers conducted a search of the premises occupied by the detainee. They secured 76,000 zloty in cash, mobile phones, and other items that could be related to the criminal enterprise. In the course of the activities, the man admitted that he was collecting cash parcels on the orders of persons contacting him via an internet messenger.<\/p>\n
The analysis of the evidentiary material performed by the officers allowed them to determine that the detainee may also be connected to another “investment” fraud that occurred in Stargard. There, the victim handed over 200,000 zloty to fraudsters. Gathered evidence indicates that the suspect acted jointly and in agreement with other persons.<\/p>\n
At the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, the District Court for Warsaw Mokot\u00f3w applied a preventive measure against the 27-year-old in the form of temporary arrest for a period of three months. The man faces up to 8 years of imprisonment.<\/p>\n
The investigation conducted by the Economic Crime Department is developmental. Police officers are analyzing further threads of the case and do not rule out further arrests of individuals making up the criminal mechanism of internet fraud.<\/p>\n
