On the eve of the 82nd anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, state authorities and veterans gathered at Warsaw’s Krasi\u0144ski Square to pay tribute to the fallen and murdered participants of the independence insurgency. President of the Republic of Poland Karol Nawrocki stated that the outbreak of the uprising in 1944 was not impulsive romanticism, but an expression of the desire for freedom.<\/p>\n
A solemn Holy Mass was celebrated at the Warsaw Uprising Monument, followed by an Apel Pami\u0119ci (Roll Call) with the participation of top state officials, including President Karol Nawrocki, Senate Marshal Ma\u0142gorzata Kidawa-B\u0142o\u0144ska, Deputy Marshal of the Sejm Krzysztof Bosak, Minister of Culture Marta Cienkowska, Minister Coordinator of Special Services Tomasz Siemoniak, and representatives of the diplomatic corps.<\/p>\n
President Karol Nawrocki emphasized that the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising was neither impulsive romanticism nor emotion, noting that the sentence on Warsaw and Poland had already been issued in 1939. He highlighted that despite this, Poles built the largest underground state in the world, complete with its own courts, education, culture, art, and underground army.<\/p>\n
Nawrocki described the insurgents as heroes ready to give their lives for dignity, humanity, sovereignty, and the independence of Poland. He added that Poland brings to the European Union a deep-rooted attachment to freedom and independence, qualities for which Poles are always ready to fight.<\/p>\n
Warsaw Mayor Rafa\u0142 Trzaskowski stated that Warsaw and Poland do not need mythology to realize their dreams, but rather fidelity to the values instilled by the veterans. He addressed the insurgents directly, calling them teachers who showed the younger generations where they came from and where to go.<\/p>\n
Trzaskowski declared that the current generation takes over the duty and obligation to follow the teachings of the veterans, ensuring that future generations continue to honor their legacy not only through monuments but through daily action.<\/p>\n
Janusz Maksymowicz, President of the Main Board of the Association of Warsaw Insurgents, recalled that for 63 days, freedom-thirsty Poles fought for the capital without outside support, suffering massive casualties before the occupant turned the city into ruins. He emphasized that Hitler’s directive to erase Warsaw from the map of Europe failed.<\/p>\n
Maksymowicz stressed that freedom and independence must be guarded and defended, particularly today when they are threatened again. He appealed to all political forces to unite regarding security and peace, highlighting the importance of this unity amid current geopolitical tensions and potential threats from the Russian Federation.<\/p>\n
The commemorations concluded with an Apel Pami\u0119ci honoring both those who fell in combat and those who spent decades after the war ensuring the memory of the uprising survived. State, local, veteran, and scout delegations laid wreaths at the Warsaw Uprising Monument, accompanied by prayers from Poland’s Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich, Orthodox Military Ordinary Archbishop Jerzy Pa\u0144kowski, and Chief Military Chaplain of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church Lt. Col. Tomasz Wola.<\/p>\n
The Warsaw Uprising was the largest armed action by the underground in German-occupied Europe, beginning on August 1, 1944, with roughly 40,000 to 50,000 insurgents.
