Today, August 1st, marks the 82nd anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, one of the most significant and tragic events in the capital’s history. Promptly at 5 PM, during the symbolic hour \u201cW\u201d, alarm sirens will wail across Warsaw. Residents will stop for a minute to pay tribute to the heroes who fought for the freedom of the city and the entire Poland.<\/p>\n
The Warsaw Uprising began on August 1, 1944. The Home Army’s uprising, which was originally planned to last for a few days, ended only after 63 days of fighting on October 3rd. As a result, 16,000 to 18,000 soldiers and 150,000 to 180,000 civilians died. Following the capitulation, residents were expelled, and Warsaw was systematically destroyed by the Germans.<\/p>\n
The central ceremonies related to hour \u201cW\u201d will take place at the Gloria Victis monument in the Pow\u0105zki Military Cemetery. Residents will also gather in Freedom Park at the Warsaw Uprising Museum, where an open-air studio with participants of the fights for the capital has been operating since 3 PM. At 5 PM, the memory of the insurgents will be honored amidst the sound of sirens. Most residents gather every year at Dmowski Roundabout in central Warsaw.<\/p>\n
At 6:30 PM, a ceremony will take place at the monument to the Fallen Indestructible at the Warsaw Insurgents Cemetery on Wolska Street. Participants will lay flowers on the kurgan containing the ashes of over 50,000 capital residents and soldiers of the insurgent army.<\/p>\n
In the evening, at 8:30 PM, joint singing of insurgent songs under the banner \u201cWarsaw residents sing (un)forbidden songs\u201d will begin at Pi\u0142sudski Square. This year’s edition also marks the 20th anniversary of the event’s organization. At 9 PM, the \u201cFire of Memory\u201d will be lit on the Warsaw Uprising Mound, which will traditionally burn for 63 days.<\/p>\n
Anniversary commemorations are not only a tribute to the fighting soldiers, but also to the thousands of civilian residents who died during bombardments, executions, and mass murders. Despite the passage of decades, the memory of their courage, suffering, and sacrifice remains alive.
