In Poland, August 2 is observed as the Day of Remembrance of the Romani and Sinti Genocide, while the European Parliament recognizes it as the European Roma and Sinti Holocaust Memorial Day.<\/p>\n
President Karol Nawrocki stated in a letter that he bows his head in tribute to the victims and strongly condemns the evil of all varieties of Nazism and chauvinism. He emphasized that civilized societies must reject hate speech, ethnic hatred, and organizations spreading racial discrimination, ensuring the memory of Porajmos remains a warning for future generations.<\/p>\n
Sinto survivor Dieter Flack, whose family largely perished in Auschwitz, warned against growing right-wing extremism, anti-gypsyism, antisemitism, and the brutalization of social life. Flack and community leaders appealed for the history of Sinti and Roma to be permanently included in school curricula across European countries. Germany began persecuting the Roma in 1941, and in December 1942, SS chief Heinrich Himmler ordered the internment of Romani people in concentration camps. A family camp known as the Zigeunerlager was established at Auschwitz II-Birkenau, where entire families faced disease, starvation, and deportation.<\/p>\n
Between February 26, 1943, and July 21, 1944, nearly 21,000 people were deported to the Zigeunerlager, which was liquidated on August 3, 1944.
