Polish Deputy Minister of Justice Arkadiusz Myrcha fell victim to a WhatsApp hijacking scam, prompting CERT Poland to issue an urgent advisory about fraudulent voting links. <\/p>\n
“If anyone on WhatsApp received a message from me with a link to vote, please do not click. It’s a virus!” announced Deputy Minister of Justice Arkadiusz Myrcha from the Civic Coalition on the X portal on Sunday before noon.<\/p>\n
Wp.pl journalist Szymon Jadczak confirmed the breach in a post, stating, “It seems someone hacked your phone because you are sending spam through messages…” Myrcha reiterated, “I reported the incident. Please do not click!”<\/p>\n
Shortly after the incident, CERT (Computer Security Incident Response Team), operating within the NASK National Research Institute, addressed the matter.<\/p>\n
“Beware of voting requests from friends! Criminals take over WhatsApp accounts and, on behalf of their owners, send messages informing about a supposed contest and asking to cast a vote,” CERT warned in a statement, while also sharing screenshots of example messages.<\/p>\n
According to CERT, the prerequisite for voting is “verification” through a WhatsApp account. Experts explain that fraudsters gain access to accounts by pairing their own device through scanning a fake QR code or entering a verification code.<\/p>\n
CERT advises that victims immediately unpair all added devices in the application settings to cut off criminal access. Users can report suspicious messages via incydent.cert.pl, the mObywatel app, or forward suspicious SMS texts to 8080.<\/p>\n
CERT noted that this is not the only method criminals use to target devices and money, having warned days earlier about cybercriminals impersonating the Gov.pl service to send SMS texts regarding housing applications.<\/p>\n
