Destructive wildfires sweep across parts of the United States, Turkey, Portugal, and Greece, triggering mass evacuations, hundreds of damaged buildings, and a fatal helicopter collision near Athens. <\/p>\n
In the Spokane area of Washington state in the U.S., fires had not died down by Sunday. Three fires, collectively referred to as the “Spokane Complex Fire,” consumed an area of approximately 2,180 hectares\u2014according to the federal team coordinating the rescue operation\u2014and have not yet been contained, with a containment rate of zero percent.<\/p>\n
Senator Maria Cantwell from Washington state stated that the cause of the fires was a “historic weather phenomenon.” The National Weather Service (NWS) warned on Sunday of conditions favoring the spread of fire, including north-northwesterly winds blowing at approximately 56 kilometers per hour and dry weather that promotes the rapid spread of flames.<\/p>\n
“The Spokane Complex Fire is currently the most serious fire in the country,” Cantwell said. Authorities reported that 60,000 people within the city limits of Spokane were evacuated. Cody Rohrbach, fire chief for Spokane County Fire District 3, conveyed that the Old Trails fire alone destroyed 640 buildings. Governor Bob Ferguson spoke by telephone with U.S. President Donald Trump, who expressed his support for people experiencing these difficult times, according to the governor.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, Ferguson declared a state of emergency statewide, implementing a ban on most open-air and agricultural burning. He also reported that a request had been filed for immediate assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and that another request for recovery funds is being prepared. “Fifteen fires raged across the state, consuming 101,171 hectares of land,” stated state Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove during a Sunday press conference. No casualties have been reported thus far.<\/p>\n
According to the power outage monitoring service PowerOutage.us, nearly 12,000 customers in Washington state\u2014the vast majority of them in Spokane\u2014were without electricity on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced on Sunday that legal proceedings are underway regarding 44 forest fires that have occurred across 16 provinces in Turkey since June 1. Authorities identified 29 suspects and arrested six of them.<\/p>\n
In a statement published on social media platforms, Gurlek announced that prosecutors are cooperating with relevant institutions to determine the causes of the fires and identify those responsible. According to the minister, six suspects were arrested, nine others were placed under judicial control, and another six suspects remain in custody pending legal proceedings.<\/p>\n
Gurlek emphasized that no forest fire case involving suspected criminal activity will remain unexplained, adding that responsibility will be borne both by those who intentionally start fires and those whose negligence led to blazes.<\/p>\n
The investigations follow a series of fires that Turkey contended with last month in the western provinces of Izmir and Mugla, the northwestern provinces of Bilecik, Bursa, and Sakarya, and the southern province of Hatay. The spread of the fire at that time was favored by high temperatures, low air humidity, and strong winds. Authorities carried out large-scale firefighting operations involving planes, helicopters, thousands of personnel, and hundreds of ground vehicles.<\/p>\n
From Sunday night into Monday, Portugal continued fighting five major fires. One of them blocked the country’s main railway line connecting Lisbon and Porto for several hours. The fire appeared in the evening on grasslands near the railway line in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, on the northern outskirts of the Portuguese capital.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a fire raging since Tuesday in Valpacos, in northern Portugal, is already the largest wildfire in the country’s forests and wasteland this year. The burn area reaches nearly 16,000 hectares. As the Portuguese civil protection conveyed on Sunday evening, despite the announcement on Saturday that control over the fire in Valpacos had been taken, it has not been extinguished, and re-ignitions occurred in several places.<\/p>\n
On Monday morning, local authorities reported that more than 900 firefighters supported by local residents were fighting the element there. Firefighters were also fighting a forest fire on Monday morning next to the popular tourist resort of Vila Nova de Milfontes in the west of the country.<\/p>\n
Fires are also currently occurring within Greece. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned on Sunday that Greece faces “extremely difficult days with extreme weather conditions” and hurricane-force winds.<\/p>\n
To date, fires northwest of the Greek capital have destroyed more than 100 homes. On the night from Saturday to Sunday, evacuations of several towns were carried out on the tourist-popular island of Kefalonia. Overall, over the course of a week, fires destroyed more than 12,000 hectares of forests and agricultural areas. A collision of two firefighting helicopters also occurred in the area of Psatha, west of Athens. The two-person crew of one of the machines died, while the crew of the second helicopter\u2014also two people\u2014was rescued.<\/p>\n
Polish firefighters flew to Spain for a rescue operation. “Polish firefighters who flew to Spain on Saturday to support local services in the fight against forest fires have started operations near the town of Avila,” conveyed PAP deputy commander of the first rotation, Capt. Lukasz Czemarmazowicz.<\/p>\n
A total of 105 firefighters from the State Fire Service will participate in the firefighting operation in Spain. Throughout August, they will serve in three consecutive 35-person rotations in the Castilla-La Mancha region, in two different locations about 180 kilometers apart\u2014in the regional capital of Toledo and the town of Cuenca.<\/p>\n

A progressive warming will occur as early as Monday: it will be around 20 degrees Celsius by the sea, 24-26 degrees in the north, 28-30 degrees in the center, and above 30 in the south, with the warmest weather in the southeastern part of the country where temperatures may reach 33-34 degrees.<\/p>\n
Only in the south will more clouds appear in places, along with possible passing rain showers and storms, while the wind will remain light to moderate from the east and southeast. From Monday night into Tuesday, temperatures will be markedly higher\u2014dropping to a minimum of 15-16 degrees Celsius by the sea, remaining around 17-19 degrees across most of the country, and even warmer in the south at around 20 degrees in places.
