Prosecutors in Warsaw have reopened an investigation into the controversial hiring and high-ranking appointments of former Ministry of National Defense official Bart\u0142omiej Misiewicz under the previous PiS administration. <\/p>\n
Bart\u0142omiej Misiewicz was one of the most recognizable yet controversial faces of the Law and Justice (PiS) government a decade ago. At 17, he began working in the office of PiS MP Antoni Macierewicz. Years later, during the PO-PSL government, he became head of the office for the parliamentary team investigating the causes of the Smolensk crash, and held functions in PiS party structures in the Piotrk\u00f3w district.<\/p>\n
Following the 2015 PiS election victory, Antoni Macierewicz became Minister of National Defense, and Bart\u0142omiej Misiewicz’s career skyrocketed. The 25-year-old activist took the positions of head of the political cabinet and press spokesman for the Ministry. Less than a year later, Macierewicz awarded Misiewicz the Gold Medal “For Merits for the Country’s Defense.” Misiewicz worked at the Ministry until 2017.<\/p>\n
In 2016, Bart\u0142omiej Misiewicz briefly served on the supervisory boards of Energa Ciep\u0142o Ostro\u0142\u0119ka and the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), and in 2017 he served for two days as the PGZ management board proxy for communication. When his career and positions drew public attention, the circumstances of his PGZ employment were analyzed by a PiS party commission.<\/p>\n
In April 2017, PiS deputy leader Joachim Brudzi\u0144ski stated that Bart\u0142omiej Misiewicz lacked the qualifications to hold functions in public administration, state-owned companies, or other areas of public life, adding an apology to all Poles who felt embarrassed or disgusted by the situation. Misiewicz subsequently resigned his party membership, later working in consulting and founding a vodka-selling company in 2020.<\/p>\n
During the PiS government, the opposition also scrutinized Misiewicz’s career. In 2016, then-opposition PO MP and current Deputy Minister of National Defense Cezary Tomczyk filed a notification demanding an examination of the circumstances surrounding the appointment of the PiS activist to the head of the political cabinet and supervisory boards, questioning his competencies.<\/p>\n
Doubts centered on the fact that Misiewicz lacked a higher education degree at the time, had not completed a supervisory board member course, and lacked sufficient documented professional experience. The preliminary prosecutor’s proceeding aimed to clarify whether Antoni Macierewicz exceeded his authority by concluding an employment contract with Misiewicz.<\/p>\n
In September 2016 interviews and subsequent statements, Bart\u0142omiej Misiewicz defended his appointments, stating that the minister oversaw the Polish Armaments Group and required leadership representation on the board, that he had collaborated with Macierewicz for a decade, and that the law permitted ministers to choose their political cabinet chiefs without extra compensation for his spokesperson role.<\/p>\n
After the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office refused to initiate an investigation in November 2016, the National Prosecutor’s Office criticized that decision last year in a report summarizing 2016-2023 actions, noting that complete evidence was not gathered and key decision-makers were never questioned.<\/p>\n
The National Prosecutor’s Office indicated that reopening the case was justified, and Gazeta.pl confirmed that on May 7, 2025, the proceedings were resumed, with the 8th Military Department launching an active investigation on June 30, 2025. The Military Gendarmerie Headquarters has since carried out procedural steps, including interviewing dozens of witnesses and analyzing gathered documentation.<\/p>\n
The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw extended the investigation until September 30, and no charges have been brought against anyone to date.<\/p>\n
Bart\u0142omiej Misiewicz previously became a defendant in a separate case when an indictment against six individuals, including Misiewicz, was filed in court in June 2021.<\/p>\n
The proceedings concerned acting to the detriment of the Polish Armaments Group and invoking influence in the Ministry of National Defense between 2016 and 2018 regarding disadvantageous contracts for concerts, fictitious training services, and defense trade fairs.
