Following four fatal incidents involving Polish nationals in the Tatra Mountains at the start of August, mountain guides and park officials are warning tourists against extreme heat and recklessness. <\/p>\n
The beginning of August brought hot weather to the Tatra Mountains and, unfortunately, four fatal accidents involving Polish citizens. Tomasz Zaj\u0105c, a Tatra guide and educator from the Tatra National Park (TPN), reported that two of these were climbing accidents where individuals fell from a great height due to errors on climbing routes, while the other two were tourist accidents.<\/p>\n
Two fatal accidents occurred on Saturday on the Polish side of the Tatras. In the area of Skrajna Sieczkowa Prze\u0142\u0105czka, a tourist fell off the trail toward Dolinka Buczynowa. On the same day, a climber scaling the wall of Mi\u0119guszowiecki Szczyt in the Morskie Oko area also lost their life.<\/p>\n
Also on Saturday, a 37-year-old Polish climber died in the Slovak High Tatras. The accident happened in the area of Skrajna Rze\u017cuchowa Turnia while climbing the popular “przez ksi\u0105\u017ck\u0119” route. Another Polish tourist died on Sunday in the Baranie Rogi area on the Slovak side, where a 38-year-old man fell from the southeastern ridge.<\/p>\n
According to the TPN representative, two of the tragic tourist incidents may have been linked to high temperatures and physical exertion. Tomasz Zaj\u0105c warned that a heatwave and strong sun combined with physical effort can cause fatigue symptoms to intensify rapidly, potentially leading to shortness of breath, circulatory arrest, and ultimately death if other health problems arise.<\/p>\n
The expert emphasized that stable weather and good tourist conditions can create a false sense of safe mountain excursions, even though high temperatures significantly increase the body’s load. The mountain guide noted that while it is always cooler in the summit zones, this can be deceptive because climbers are fully exposed to harsh sunlight with nowhere to hide.<\/p>\n
The TPN educator appealed to tourists to prepare adequately, primarily by bringing sufficient amounts of fluids. The expert advises taking up to two liters of water for high-mountain routes, or correspondingly more for longer trips, recommending medium- or highly-mineralized water consumed regularly in small sips. Basic heat protection rules also include wearing a head covering and applying sunscreen.<\/p>\n
The Tatra guide and educator highlighted that the current week brings another wave of high temperatures accompanied by more dynamic weather, including sudden rainfall and thunderstorms. Tourists are urged to properly plan trips and check weather forecasts each time, noting dangers such as lightning, heavy rain, hail, and strong winds, while remembering that mountain stream water is not safe for drinking.<\/p>\n
According to IMGW forecasts for the Tatras and Podhale, Tuesday afternoon will bring passing rain showers and local thunderstorms with maximum temperatures between 32\u00b0C and 34\u00b0C, around 19\u00b0C on mountain peaks, and wind gusts up to 70 km\/h during storms.
