Jerozolimskie Traffic Restored at Dworczak Zachodni Due to Tram Tunnel Work

Starting Tuesday morning, August 4, drivers will once again use two carriageways on Al. Jerozolimskie near Dworzec Zachodni as road restoration proceeds over the new tram tunnel.

Traffic Restoration and New Road Layout

From Tuesday morning, August 4, drivers will once again use two carriageways of Al. Jerozolimskie in the area of Dworzec Zachodni. On each of them, three wider traffic lanes will be designated, including a bus lane. The change in traffic organization is related to the reconstruction of the target road layout over the constructed tram tunnel.

The new organization will be introduced on the night from Monday to Tuesday, August 3 to 4. Drivers traveling in both directions will have three lanes, each 3.5 meters wide, at their disposal. On the side of Dworzec Zachodni, traffic will be directed to the carriageway with a new asphalt surface.

On both carriageways, the left lanes will remain temporarily fenced off in places where road workers will dismantle the crossovers that previously allowed travel between the lanes of Al. Jerozolimskie. For technological reasons, the target bus bay at Dworzec Zachodni will also remain closed.

Upcoming Paving Work and Lane Restrictions

This does not yet mean the complete end of road works. On the carriageway on the side of the Five Sisters Park, the contractor will lay a new surface. During these works, the carriageway leading towards the center will be narrowed down to two lanes again. The precise date of this change is to be provided in a separate announcement.

The restoration of two separate carriageways was possible after the completion of work on installations conflicting with the tunnel structure. At the turn of April and May, the tunnel built under Al. Jerozolimskie and the Five Sisters Park was connected to the underground stop located at Dworzec Zachodni. The structures were previously built as part of two separate investments – the construction of the tram route and the reconstruction of the Warszawa Zachodnia railway station.

Progress of Underground Tram Tunnel Construction

Inside the tunnel itself, track, installation, and finishing works are underway. According to information from Tramwaje Warszawskie, in the second half of July, about two-thirds of the underground trackbed was already ready. The contractor has also started making the track slab at the underground stop, building technical rooms, and working in evacuation stairwells.

The new route will be about 1.6 kilometers long. It will connect Grójecka Street with Dworzec Zachodni and will be routed along Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 r. Street, and then through a tunnel under the Five Sisters Park and Al. Jerozolimskie. About 600 meters of the trackbed will be underground, and another 100 meters or so will run along a ramp leading to the tunnel.

Stops, Connections, and Completion Timeline

Along the way, a stop will be built at Szczęśliwicka Street. The final stop will be located underground, at the height of the Dworzec Zachodni building from the side of Al. Jerozolimskie. In front of the platforms, there will be turnouts allowing trams to change their direction of travel.

The tram platforms at level minus two will be connected to the mezzanine at level minus one by elevators, fixed stairs, and double sets of escalators. The exit from the tram section will be located directly at the entrances to the railway platforms. Passengers will also be able to reach the surface using elevators and stairs.

Construction work on the tunnel section is scheduled to end in the fourth quarter of 2026. The opening of the entire route from Grójecka to Dworzec Zachodni will take place after technical tests and approvals by external services are carried out.

Broader Tram Network Integration and Funding

The route to Dworzec Zachodni is part of the planned tram connection between Wola, Ochota, Mokotów, and Wilanów. Subsequent sections are being designed – from Dworzec Zachodni to Kasprzaka Street and between Ochota and Mokotów, along Pola Mokotowskie. The fragment of the tunnel under the railway tracks was made earlier during the reconstruction of the Warszawa Zachodnia railway station.

The broader project covering the construction of subsequent sections of the tram route, the purchase of rolling stock, and accompanying infrastructure is valued at over 1.92 billion zlotys. Co-financing from European Union funds amounts to 900 million zlotys.

Starting Tuesday morning, August 4, drivers will once again use two carriageways on Al.
