French journalists noted that violations of the general fire ban\u2014such as discarding cigarette butts or grilling near forests\u2014were previously typically punished with a 135-euro fine. Now, even without a fire occurring, non-compliant individuals can be detained by police and brought before the prosecutor on charges of endangering the lives of others, an offense carrying up to one year in prison and a 15,000-euro fine.<\/p>\n
The French interior minister, Laurent Nu\u00f1ez, visited the Interministerial Operational Crisis Management Center on Monday to assess the nationwide wildfire situation.<\/p>\n
“In Gironde, the fire has been contained, though observation points requiring special vigilance are still maintained in several places. In the Var department, the situation is being closely monitored following the resurgence yesterday evening of the fire in Pont\u00e8ves, which burned nearly 1,500 additional hectares.
