Ukraine’s military counterintelligence has established that Russian special services are increasingly trying to eliminate Ukrainian soldiers using so-called “honeytraps.” First, Russian agents establish contact with them via fake accounts on dating portals or internet messengers, later luring them onto staged dates where they can die.<\/p>\n
Russia lures Ukrainian soldiers on dates. Russians most frequently use improvised explosive devices for assassinations, placing them at the planned attack site. Agents also use poisons produced from narcotic, psychotropic substances, and other chemical compounds.<\/p>\n
The SBU cited a situation from March 2025 in the Kharkiv Oblast as an example of such activity. Services then detained a Federal Security Service (FSB) agent who, under the guise of “volunteer assistance,” handed poisoned medicines and food to a Ukrainian soldier.<\/p>\n
In another case, a Russian agent sent a drink containing a lethal dose of methadone and then suggested that the Ukrainian drink the gift during an online date using webcams. However, these plans were thwarted by SBU officers who intercepted the package, and chemical tests confirmed the presence of toxic substances.<\/p>\n
In January 2026, Ukraine’s military counterintelligence detained an FSB agent who attacked a Ukrainian soldier in Zaporizhzhia. Services established that Russian services lured him to the city’s industrial zone under the pretext of a date with a girl met on a dating portal, where a masked assassin instead attacked the soldier from behind and inflicted six stab wounds.<\/p>\n
The SBU has thwarted over 50 such assassination attempts since the beginning of 2026. Services conduct proceedings in such situations based on several articles of the criminal code concerning treason, premeditated murder, and an act of terrorism, with perpetrators facing life imprisonment and property forfeiture.<\/p>\n
The Security Service of Ukraine appeals to Ukrainian citizens, including Defense Forces soldiers, to exercise extreme caution.
