Amid severe European heatwaves and domestic environmental restrictions on power plants, Energy Minister Mi\u0142osz Motyka assures that Poland’s energy security remains unaffected and blackouts are not expected. <\/p>\n
Head of the energy ministry Mi\u0142osz Motyka was a guest on the RMF FM station, commenting on European electrical grid problems resulting from heatwaves. Interviewer Tomasz Terlikowski asked the Polish People’s Party politician whether our energy sector would withstand this year’s heatwave.<\/p>\n
In Poland, for environmental reasons, some power plants have limited their operations, but this has no impact on energy security, replied Mi\u0142osz Motyka. When pressed on whether we face blackouts, he added that a blackout is an unforeseen phenomenon by the operator, who does everything to avoid it.<\/p>\n
Motyka stated that regarding water, we have the situation hardest in history, not only concerning Poland and the cooling of generation units, but also regarding low water levels.<\/p>\n
Our energy situation is different because we have more distributed sources. At moments like today, photovoltaics and renewable energy sources help a lot, which are severely lacking in countries like Serbia and Hungary.<\/p>\n
Motyka also recalled that Poland’s energy sector has a different structure and is not dependent on a single power plant, unlike Hungary. Although some power plants in Poland had to limit work, such as in Kozienice and Po\u0142aniec, this poses no threat to the security of the energy system.<\/p>\n
The minister noted that Poland currently has a surplus of energy production and Poles do not face power supply interruptions. At a time when Budapest is considering shutting down a nuclear power plant, Poland is exporting energy.<\/p>\n
The head of the energy ministry emphasized that ensuring energy security, including during heatwaves, is served by the capacity fee visible on energy bills.<\/p>\n
Extreme heatwaves will hit Poland, reaching up to 40 degrees. The minister’s message is especially significant as the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued heat warnings for almost the entire country, with temperatures ranging from 29 degrees C in the northeast, around 36 degrees C in the center, up to 40 degrees C in the southeast.<\/p>\n
For Poland, this is the second heatwave this year, defined as at least three consecutive days with temperatures of 30 degrees C and above. During the first heatwave at the turn of June and July, the IMGW station in S\u0142ubice recorded a record 40.5 degrees C.<\/p>\n
For Western Europe residents, this is the fifth heatwave, with the first arriving as early as May, the last month of meteorological spring. Already back then, temperature records were broken in many places across Europe, including London.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
