Rising Danube water levels and anticipated rainfall in Austria have helped Hungary avert a total shutdown of the critical Paks nuclear power plant amid severe drought conditions. <\/p>\n

The rise in water level is significant for the Paks nuclear power plant, which must be cooled by it. The Hungarian Prime Minister stated that the last of its eight turbines is still operating and appealed to industrial consumers and households to further reduce electricity generation consumption.<\/p>\n
Electricity production at the Paks nuclear power plant was gradually restricted as the water level in the Danube dropped to record lows. Over the past weekend, Hungarian authorities and the plant operator MVM Paksi Atomeromu Zrt. warned that a total closure of the plant was inevitable, and consequently, the suspension of electricity production.<\/p>\n
The government reported on its website on Thursday that over the past 24 hours, the water level of the Danube in the Paks area rose by four centimeters, and the upward trend is continuing. The current output of the power plant is 226 megawatts. Under normal conditions, the facility generates 2,000 MW and produces nearly half of Hungary’s electricity.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Economy and Energy of Hungary, based on data from the electricity transmission system operator MAVIR, stated that on Wednesday at 19:45, the peak load of the system was 6,750 megawatts, and on Thursday it may reach 6,700 megawatts.<\/p>\n
MVM indicated that the main reasons for the drop in the Danube’s water level are the deepening of the riverbed and the effects of global climate change. Earlier, the company reported that this summer brought a prolonged drought and heatwaves.<\/p>\n
The power plant could operate even at lower river levels, but this requires modernization, which is currently underway. “Technical work related to the deeper placement of suction pipes has begun, and in a few years the nuclear power plant will be able to continue production even at a lower water level than the current one,” the operator wrote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
