Following two years of construction, residents and tourists can now enjoy a transformed three-hectare pedestrian zone featuring trees, benches, fountains, and an advanced water retention system in central Warsaw. <\/p>\n
After two years of work, residents and tourists were given access to a rebuilt section of Warsaw’s strict center covering Z\u0142ota and Zgoda streets. Since August 3, people have been able to use the space, which was transformed from an area dominated by asphalt, parking lots, and car traffic into a green pedestrian zone featuring trees, benches, fountains, and an extensive water retention system.<\/p>\n
The reconstruction of Z\u0142ota is part of the New Center of Warsaw program. The investment also included Zgoda street, fragments of Jasna, Sienkiewicza, and Marsza\u0142kowska streets, as well as squares located between them. The modernized area spans more than three hectares.<\/p>\n
The new space connected the Five Corners square and Chmielna street with Warsaw Insurgents square, Central square, and the area around the Museum of Modern Art. One of the main assumptions of the investment was to create a convenient pedestrian route between parts of \u015ar\u00f3dmie\u015bcie rebuilt in recent years.<\/p>\n
The space of Z\u0142ota street has been designated primarily for pedestrians and cyclists. Passenger car traffic will be restricted, and entry into the area covered by the new traffic organization will be enabled by retractable bollards.<\/p>\n
Residents, entrepreneurs, and institutions with parking spaces on their properties can obtain special entry identifiers. Automatic bollards are set to lower after recognizing a car’s license plate number or upon using a user-issued card, with the system being prepared for launch alongside the target traffic organization. No public parking spaces are provided on the rebuilt sections.<\/p>\n
A total of 81 elm trees were planted on Z\u0142ota street itself. Across the entire rebuilt block, there are a total of 200 new trees and nearly three thousand square meters of green areas planted with shrubs and perennials, alongside benches and small architecture elements.<\/p>\n
Concrete paving has been replaced by cobblestones, and the layout of the curbs refers to the pre-war route of Z\u0142ota street. New squares, flowerbeds, and tree alignments are intended to reduce space heating and retain rainwater.<\/p>\n
One of the most important changes was the liquidation of the former tunnel leading under Marsza\u0142kowska street. In its place, a surface pedestrian crossing was created, connecting Z\u0142ota with the space on the western side of Marsza\u0142kowska.<\/p>\n
Part of the surface recovered from the tunnel was used to build a retention system. Under the rebuilt block, there are tanks capable of holding a total of over three million liters of water.<\/p>\n
The collected rainwater is used for automatic watering of trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds. Sensors control water quality, including salinity levels and the presence of petroleum substances, switching to the municipal water supply network if parameters fail, while winter maintenance avoids road salt.<\/p>\n
Two fountains operating in closed circuits were launched in the new space, with water being cleaned, chlorinated, and constantly monitored. The first installation takes the form of a landscape fountain with a stone composition and seating, while the larger second fountain is located closer to Marsza\u0142kowska street and equipped with lighting.<\/p>\n
Due to traffic restrictions on Z\u0142ota, Zgoda, and part of Chmielna, new operating rules were prepared for local restaurants, shops, and service points. Twenty-five delivery spaces were designated around the area, including seven on Marsza\u0142kowska street at the height of Z\u0142ota.<\/p>\n
Suppliers will also be able to enter the restricted area between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM, while residents and entrepreneurs retain access to private parking spaces and garages.<\/p>\n
Work related to the New Center of Warsaw program will continue. Subsequent stages are scheduled to include the further reconstruction of Sienkiewicza street, the surroundings of the National Philharmonic, Krucza street, and the space along Jerozolimskie Avenue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
