The Polish Senate has blocked Mateusz Szpytma’s appointment as president of the Institute of National Remembrance, leaving the position vacant and restarting the selection procedure. <\/p>\n
38 senators voted against the candidacy, while 50 voted against, and one person abstained. Filling the position of the head of the IPN requires the consent of both chambers of parliament, meaning the post remains vacant and the entire procedure must start from the beginning.<\/p>\n
Szpytma was recommended by a majority of the IPN College members. As stated in the Sejm by its representative, Tadeusz Wolsza, he was supported by seven of the nine college members, with the candidate’s professional achievements and excellent knowledge of the institute being decisive factors.<\/p>\n
The Sejm voted in favor of Szpytma’s selection on July 17. At that time, Szpytma’s candidacy was supported by all present MPs from PiS, PSL, and Confederation. The majority of Poland 2050 MPs, including Szymon Ho\u0142ownia, also voted in favor. The KO, Lewica, Centrum clubs, and the Razem circle voted against.<\/p>\n
Szpytma assured the Senate on Thursday that he is not a person who will make a revolution in the Institute of National Remembrance if he becomes president, preferring instead to change the institution step by step through evolution.<\/p>\n
The position of IPN president has been vacant since August 2025, when Karol Nawrocki, who had held the function since 2021, became president. In November, the Sejm failed to choose the IPN College-recommended vice-president Karol Polejowski, who currently directs the work of the institute.<\/p>\n
Mateusz Szpytma was born in 1975 in \u0141a\u0144cut and graduated in history and political science from Jagiellonian University, where he also earned his doctorate in 2012 with a thesis on the history of the United People’s Party in the former Krak\u00f3w voivodeship.
