Following a night spent evacuating dogs from an illegal puppy farm in Kielce, police confirmed that more than 300 animals were found at the scene. The owner now faces up to five years in prison, with veterinary inspectors revealing the details of the operation inside a former henhouse to PAP.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, PAP reported that hundreds of dogs were found kept in dramatic conditions across two properties in Kielce. Friday brought new facts as police updated the number of secured animals from 200 to over 300.<\/p>\n
Senior Aspirant Jacek Borek from the Kielce Municipal Police Headquarters confirmed that inspections and evidence collection continued from early Friday morning. The 35-year-old owner of the breeding facility was detained and remains at the disposal of the police.<\/p>\n
Investigations are proceeding under Article 35 of the Animal Protection Act concerning animal abuse, Borek explained. The offense carries a penalty of up to three years in prison, but if prosecutors classify the action as animal abuse with particular cruelty, the sentence could reach up to five years.<\/p>\n
Kielce Mayor Agata Wojda, who participated in the intervention, did not hide her shock at the scale of the operation. She reported that she was at the scene for several hours, discovering a new number of animals hour by hour.<\/p>\n
The animals, mostly French bulldogs, suffered from extreme heat reaching up to 38 degrees Celsius inside the buildings. She added that many female dogs were in the process of giving birth, and the bodies of puppies were found on the properties.<\/p>\n
Deputy Provincial Veterinary Inspector Mariusz Gwardjan revealed to PAP that the owner played a double game. One location served as a showcase site that raised no major objections during last year’s inspection, while two streets away in an old, abandoned henhouse, the man organized an illegal puppy factory.<\/p>\n
Gwardjan emphasized that breeding brachycephalic dogs in such conditions was torture. Brachycephalic dogs naturally struggle with breathing, and given the unventilated indoor temperature, it is hard to imagine what happened, the inspector noted, adding that police correctly classified the situation as animal abuse.<\/p>\n
Gwardjan noted that the owner attempted to maintain appearances of legality by registering the activity with a breeders’ association, a legal requirement. However, the data provided to the veterinary inspection drastically differed from reality, as a registration application submitted in June listed 21 adult individuals, whereas over ten times that number were discovered on site.<\/p>\n
Currently, the priority for services is saving the life and health of the recovered animals. Over 70 dogs, mainly mothers with puppies, were taken to the shelter in Dyminyna, while another large group was taken over by the Warsaw-based Judyta Foundation, which sent representatives to Kielce.<\/p>\n
Wojda assured PAP that authorities must care for the welfare of the animals, subjecting them to veterinary checks with some already undergoing treatment. The legal status of the animals remains complicated due to ownership rights, but the city is preparing for temporary foster procedures if shelter capacities are fully exhausted.<\/p>\n
The shelter in Dyminach is appealing for support, needing specialized puppy food, blankets, and additional pens.
