Asteroid 2019 NY2 has an estimated diameter ranging from 150 to 330 meters. It will approach Earth on August 10 of this year at 00:20 Universal Time. It will fly past at a speed of 9.6 km\/s at a distance of 6.5 Earth-Moon distances, which corresponds to approximately 2.5 million kilometers.<\/p>\n
The body poses no threat. This will be its closest flyby in the next 150 years. Asteroid 2019 NY2 was discovered in 2019.<\/p>\n
The asteroid’s orbital period around the Sun is 845 days, or 2.3 years. It orbits in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. It belongs to the Apollo group, which consists of near-Earth asteroids whose orbits intersect not only Earth’s orbit but sometimes Venus’s as well.<\/p>\n
NASA planned to use the asteroid’s approach for radar research, but the observations were ultimately cancelled. During such observations, the signal is transmitted by the 70-meter Goldstone antenna, and the reflected radar echo is received by the 100-meter Green Bank antenna.
