A massive stir was caused on the West Pomeranian coast when a multi-meter marine mammal was spotted swimming dangerously close to the beach near the Mi\u0119dzyzdroje bathing area. Thanks to the efficient action of WOPR lifeguards and specialists from the WWF Blue Patrol, the freely drifting whale was safely escorted to the protected waters of the Wolin National Park.<\/p>\n
The large marine mammal, spotted on Saturday near the Mi\u0119dzyzdroje bathing area, swam away under the escort of a WOPR boat and the supervision of the WWF Blue Patrol to the waters of the Wolin National Park near Wise\u0142ka, Konrad Wrzecionkowski of the Wolin National Park reported to PAP on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The several-meter-long marine mammal was spotted on Saturday afternoon close to the Mi\u0119dzyzdroje beach. The Water Voluntary Rescue Service passed information about the drifting whale to specialists from WWF Polska, and the Blue Patrol arrived at the scene to check the animal’s condition and secure its departure.<\/p>\n
It was a marine mammal that could have been more than 6 meters long, while other witnesses spoke of 3 to 4 meters, with the exact species remaining unknown. Local WWF Blue Patrol leader and Wolin National Park employee Konrad Wrzecionkowski stated that WOPR Mi\u0119dzyzdroje was asked to check for any nets or entanglements, and it turned out not to be entangled and was swimming freely.<\/p>\n
The whale moved eastwards around the seaside town of Wise\u0142ka, and Wrzecionkowski explained that it was escorted until approximately 5:50 PM by a WOPR boat to secure it against other watercraft.<\/p>\n
Lifeguards left the animal about 800 meters from the shore in the waters of the Wolin National Park, where motorboats are prohibited from sailing and drones are not allowed to fly, Wrzecionkowski emphasized, noting that scientists from the Marine Station of the University of Gda\u0144sk on Hel were consulted on an ongoing basis during the operation.<\/p>\n
In February 2025, a nearly 10-meter whale entangled in nets was spotted several hundred meters from the Mi\u0119dzyzdroje fishing base and was rescued by SAR units, WOPR, and the WWF Blue Patrol, with scientists identifying it as a humpback whale, a species from the rorqual family.<\/p>\n
