There are also indications that Orb\u00e1n may seek the position of UN Under-Secretary-General, according to information shared on X on Monday, August 10, by Panyi, who cited conversations with Hungarian diplomats and officials.<\/p>\n
Having concluded in recent months that his career in domestic politics has ended, the former prime minister is considering options to withdraw from the country, the journalist stated. He recalled that he had previously written about potential assistance that Orb\u00e1n’s American allies might attempt to provide him. According to his information, the former prime minister is most interested in the position of UN Under-Secretary-General.<\/p>\n
Panyi contacted the former prime minister’s party, Fidesz, regarding these reports. Its spokesperson, Bertalan Havasi, wrote that it is “fake news.”<\/p>\n
At first glance, these two options\u2014FIFA and the UN\u2014seem completely different: one relates to Orb\u00e1n’s long-standing passion for football, while the other concerns one of the most important international organizations in the world. However, they share the fact that they would offer the former prime minister a chance to continue his career on the international stage and maintain the status to which he has grown accustomed over more than a decade and a half in power, the journalist noted.<\/p>\n
He added that a high-ranking position within FIFA structures, such as the vice presidency, would provide prestige and a place in the top leadership of world football, but would not come with diplomatic immunity. In contrast, securing a sufficiently high-ranking position at the UN could entail privileges and immunities providing him with significant legal protection, at least outside the country’s borders, Panyi emphasized.<\/p>\n
After 16 years of uninterrupted rule, Orb\u00e1n’s party suffered a clear defeat in April to the party of current Prime Minister Peter Magyar, Tisza, which won a constitutional majority of 141 out of 199 seats in parliament.
