Budapest police have launched an investigation and appealed to residents for assistance after a suspected World War II artillery shell exposed by the receding Danube vanished before officers arrived. <\/p>\n
The discovery was made when the river’s water level dropped low enough to reveal objects resting on the bottom. According to the Budapest police headquarters, however, officers did not find the item upon arriving at the scene.<\/p>\n
Police have launched an investigation into the suspected improper handling of explosive materials while simultaneously asking residents of the Hungarian capital for help in locating the object.<\/p>\n
Based on photographs taken by the finder, authorities do not rule out that the sought-after item is a World War II artillery shell. Officials warned residents not to try to move, dismantle, or transport the object.<\/p>\n
It was emphasized that even decades-old unexploded ordnance stuck in soil or water can pose a hazard, meaning they should be handled exclusively by explosives specialists.<\/p>\n
The low water level in the Danube is caused by extreme heat and a lack of precipitation. Aside from causing problems in navigation and the operation of Hungary’s sole nuclear power plant, recent weeks have exposed numerous explosive charges and damaged fragments of the historical Franz Joseph Bridge in the Hungarian capital.<\/p>\n
In early August, Budapest authorities shut down 40 city fountains and artificial waterfalls.
