The Warsaw Regional Prosecutor’s Office has launched an internal audit to verify the legality and procedural justification of the three-month detention order issued against journalist Leszek Kraskowski.<\/p>\n
Leszek Kraskowski is suspected of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as threatening the life of the Piaseczno police chief. A court ordered his three-month arrest, citing flight risk and the severity of potential penalties.<\/p>\n
The investigation began after an email was sent to the police chief containing alleged death threats against him and those who might intervene. During a vehicle search, authorities discovered a firearm and ammunition.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors have also incorporated evidence from a previously suspended case against the journalist, in which he was accused of domestic abuse. The prior proceedings were halted due to his repeated failure to attend court-ordered psychiatric evaluations.<\/p>\n
The Ombudsman, Marcin Wi\u0105cek, and Press Club Polska president Marcin Lewicki have demanded explanations regarding the necessity of the harsh pre-trial detention. Media reports indicate the journalist\u2019s defense attorney was notified of the detention hearing with insufficient time to participate effectively.<\/p>\n
Marcin Lewicki expressed alarm over the potential infringement on the right to defense. He noted that while the charges are formally unrelated to Kraskowski\u2019s work, his history of publishing critical material about government officials requires a particularly rigorous examination of these procedural decisions.<\/p>\n
In a separate action, dozens of journalists signed an open letter to Justice Minister Waldemar \u017burka expressing their firm opposition to the court’s decision to hold Kraskowski in custody.<\/p>\n
