The Ministry of Health is exploring solutions, including flat-rate funding for smaller maternity units and the potential for birthing homes to prevent “white spots” on the medical map. Currently, officials are debating the viability of a 700-birth-per-year threshold, which the ministry deems necessary for safety, though hospitals argue this figure fails to capture true quality of care.<\/p>\n
As birth rates continue to decline, with the number of operational maternity wards falling from 406 in 2010 to 283 today, the state faces a demographic shift.
