Prosecutors are investigating the case of two siblings, now 47, who were allegedly held captive for 30 years at a secluded farm near Suwa\u0142ki until police intervened this past May. <\/p>\n
According to Wirtualna Polska, Janusz and Marzena were officially claimed to have left the area years ago, with stories circulating that one joined a monastery in Sejny and the other moved abroad. Investigators believe they never actually left the farm belonging to Jan Z., a farmer well-known in the local community.<\/p>\n
The secret unraveled in mid-May following a police intervention at the property. The siblings have since been placed in a psychiatric hospital for care. No charges have been filed yet in the village, which sits on the outskirts of the Wigierski National Park.<\/p>\n
Following the death of Jan Z. on January 23, his widow offered conflicting explanations for the siblings’ absence, claiming they were either working, attending a religious service, or living abroad. Neighbors, however, reported never seeing them.<\/p>\n
One resident recalled that social workers visited the home years ago when Janusz was a child, noting he seemed “wild,” but the case was later dropped. The siblings’ disappearance from public view became permanent in the mid-90s after they completed primary school, as legal requirements for schooling changed, leaving them off the radar of local authorities.<\/p>\n
Jan Z. managed all formal affairs personally at the gate, never allowing visitors onto the property, which was secured by a locked gate and guarded by eight to ten dogs. On June 16, the Suwa\u0142ki Prosecutor’s Office ordered investigative actions, including searches of the home and outbuildings to verify reports that the siblings lived in poor conditions, potentially in an attic or basement.<\/p>\n
