Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has announced he will return his Polish state decoration in protest after President Karol Nawrocki stripped Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle. <\/p>\n
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has publicly criticized the decision by President Karol Nawrocki to revoke Volodymyr Zelensky’s Order of the White Eagle, describing the move as a “strategic mistake” that serves only Russian interests.<\/p>\n
President Nawrocki explained that the decision followed Zelensky’s approval of naming a Ukrainian military unit after the UPA. Following consultations with the Order’s Chapter, the President opted to rescind the honor.<\/p>\n
In response to the revocation, Minister Sybiha announced his intention to return his own Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, which he received in October 2022.<\/p>\n
Sybiha stated that he does not see a way to retain the high state decoration given such “imprudent actions” by the Polish side, noting that the gesture of returning it is a reaction to the perceived disregard shown toward the Ukrainian state.<\/p>\n
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister emphasized that Kyiv sought to avoid this conflict, noting that efforts to depoliticize historical issues and restart exhumation works have been ongoing for the past 18 months.<\/p>\n
