Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has urged his countrymen not to renounce Polish state orders, warning that the current diplomatic escalation over historical grievances plays into Moscow’s hands. <\/p>\n
“I am against Ukrainians renouncing medals that Poland, as a state, awarded them for merit. We cannot fix one harmful and erroneous decision by the current president of Poland with other erroneous decisions,” stated former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk on social media.<\/p>\n
According to Yatsenyuk, Volodymyr Zelensky should attend the URC 2026 Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdansk next week and deliver a speech addressing the legacy of John Paul II.<\/p>\n
Yatsenyuk argued that Zelensky should use the conference to initiate a broad, multi-level dialogue involving not only historians but also military personnel, artists, entrepreneurs, and journalists.<\/p>\n
“He should say that we understand the historical pain of our nations and that the best way to overcome the divisions of the past is to unite for the good of the future. We must keep a cool head; the fate of Ukraine, Poland, and Europe is at stake,” Yatsenyuk concluded.<\/p>\n
Karol Nawrocki announced his decision to revoke the Order of the White Eagle awarded to Volodymyr Zelensky in 2023. The move follows Zelensky\u2019s decision to name a military unit after the “Heroes of the UPA.”<\/p>\n
Nawrocki explained that for most of Polish society, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) remains responsible for mass crimes against Polish citizens during World War II, noting that at least 100,000 Polish citizens were murdered and remain without a proper burial.<\/p>\n
In reaction, Volodymyr Zelensky announced he would return the Order of the White Eagle to Poland, emphasizing that Ukraine remains grateful for Polish support and open to cooperation to avoid contradictory interpretations of the past.<\/p>\n
Former Ukrainian presidents Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko, and Petro Poroszenko also decided to renounce their Polish state orders.
