The Lithuanian government has officially resigned, with the cabinet remaining in an acting capacity until President Gitanas Nauseda formalizes the transition and presents a new Prime Minister to parliament. <\/p>\n
“Despite all the difficulties, we have reasons to be proud, and each of you has made a significant contribution to the prosperity of our state and the improvement of people’s lives,” said Prime Minister Ruginiene during the final cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n
The resolution on the resignation was approved unanimously and will be submitted to President Gitanas Nauseda. The head of state will authorize the current cabinet to continue its duties until a new government is formed.<\/p>\n
According to the constitution, the president must present a candidate for the new prime minister to parliament within 15 days. Based on an agreement among the new majority, Social Democrat leader Mindaugas Sinkeviczius is set to assume the position.<\/p>\n
Once approved by the Seimas, the new prime minister will have a maximum of 15 days to present the cabinet and its program, both of which must be agreed upon with the president.<\/p>\n
The new parliamentary majority was formed following the Social Democrats’ decision to terminate cooperation with the Dawn of the Nemunas party. The new coalition holds 75 out of 141 seats in parliament.<\/p>\n
The new coalition consists of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, the Union of Democrats “For Lithuania,” and the parliamentary factions of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union and the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania \u2013 Christian Families Alliance.<\/p>\n
Under the coalition agreement, several ministerial posts will change. The Democrats will take over the ministries of agriculture, energy, and health, while the Social Democrats will lead the Ministry of Environment. Ruginiene is expected to become the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs.<\/p>\n
The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party council made the decision to change the coalition composition on June 6. This move excluded the Dawn of the Nemunas and invited the Union of Democrats “For Lithuania” back into the government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
