The widow\u2019s pension is not a new, standalone benefit but a mechanism allowing for the combination of two existing entitlements: one’s own pension and a survivor’s pension. It is not available to every surviving spouse; recipients must meet specific legal conditions.<\/p>\n
Applicants must have reached retirement age (60 for women, 65 for men), maintained a marital union until the spouse’s death, and acquired rights to a survivor’s pension no earlier than five years before reaching retirement age. Additionally, the applicant must not have entered into a new marriage.<\/p>\n
Starting in January 2027, the calculation index for combined benefits will increase. Eligible seniors will be able to choose between receiving 100 percent of a survivor’s pension plus 25 percent of their own pension, or 100 percent of their own pension plus 25 percent of the survivor’s benefit.<\/p>\n
While this increase is expected to boost monthly payouts by several hundred to one thousand zlotys, the total sum of the combined benefits remains capped at three times the lowest pension rate. Following the 2026 indexation and projected 2027 adjustments, this ceiling is expected to rise to 6,142.02 PLN gross.<\/p>\n
Recipients must formally apply for the widow\u2019s pension via the ZUS PUE portal, electronically, by mail, or in person at a ZUS branch. While the initial application requires selection of the preferred payment variant, the 2027 increase to the payout index will be applied automatically by ZUS without the need for a new application.<\/p>\n
